American Gold Buffalo
2018 American Gold Buffalo
Originally introduced in 2006 by the United States Mint, the American Gold Buffalo is a 24-Karat Bullion coin. The American Gold Buffalo is represented with an Indian head Native American on the obverse and an American Bison on the reverse. It models after the Indian Head nickel and this was an opportunity for the United States Mint to produce for the first time ever, a .9999 24-Karat gold coin that would be sold to the general public.
Short History of the American Gold Buffalo
Since its inception on 2006, the American Gold Buffalo has benefited from both its increase in popularity and the trend in gold prices. Following the Presidential $1 Coin Act, there was a mandated need to create a .9999 gold coin with a face value of $50 and a limited amount of only 300,000 units. The American Gold Buffalo is currently being minted at the West Point Mint in New York. Initially the coins was only struck in a 1 ounce size between 2006 and 2007. As of 2008, the face value and weight of the coin was modifies to create $5, $10 and $25 face values with 1/2, 1/4 and a 1/10 size respectively.
