American Silver Eagle Various Dates

American Silver Eagle

The American Silver Eagle was first minted in 1986 and there are over 400 million in circulation since then.

The American Silver Eagle series was first authorized by Congress under the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Title II of the law directs that the value of the coin shall be $1 and should weigh one troy ounce. In 1986, the first coins were struck by the United States Mint out of 99.9 fine silver.

One side of the American Silver Eagle hosts the famous "Walking Liberty" design that was created by Adolph A. Weinman. As numismatists know, that particular design made its first appearance on the Walking Liberty half-dollar in the year 1916. Interestingly, that particular coin was only 90% silver and lasted until 1947. Considered to be one of the world's most beautiful coins, the half-dollar remains widely sought after because of its elegance and importance.

Meanwhile, the opposite side of the coin shows the brave eagle, a symbol of patriotism that was first depicted on US coins in the 18th century. The eagle on the American Silver Eagle coins was created by famous U.S Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. The design is crowned by 13 stars that represent the original 13 American Colonies. The American Bald Eagle, of course, illustrates the country's patriotic ideals and its pursuit of freedom, which is why this particular coin is very stunning because it represents in a nutshell what America is all about.

The 2018 American Silver Eagle is a very wise investment, especially if you are looking to diversify your portfolio. For one, this bullion coin is backed by the US Mint, and it will likely retain its value regardless of the state of the economy. Second, you can include this in your Individual Retirement Account. Third, coin collectors are always going to be interested in the value of the silver in this coin.
