Canadian Silver Maple Leaf

Canadian Silver Maple Leaf

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was first produced in 1988 by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM), although they were not minted until two years later. This beautiful 1 oz piece is a sought after coin because of its graded purity of 99.99% fine silver (you can't have 100% pure silver because it will literally melt in your hands).

The 2018 Canadian Silver Maple leaf features a diameter of 38 millimeters and a width of 3.29 millimeter. It has featured the famed Maple Leaf, which has been Canada's symbol since the 1700's, on the obverse side. The reverse side sometimes features a different design but the face of the coin-and its iconic symbol-is constant.

For this one, you have the right profile of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse side. The words "ELIZABETH II" are engraved on top, the denomination of the coin, and the date of issue.

On the obverse, "CANADA" is written on top, the weight of the coin, along with the grade of the material used. Also engraved on the face of the coin are the words "ARGENT PUR." Argent is simply the French translation for silver. It could also mean "money."

The 2018 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf retained the security features first introduced by RCM in 2014. Among the security features hard-wired into the coin are the machine radial lines that ripple out from the center. These are very hard to reproduce. The leaf itself adds an extra layer of security because micro-engraved on the image-not visible to the naked eye-is the year of the production.

Aesthetics wise, this coin is very elegant and well-crafted, which is why this remains one of the most collectible coins out there. The liquidity of the Canadian economy, as well as the fact that this could be included in your Individual Retirement Account, makes the 2018 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf a worthwhile investment.
